This week's online film studies lecture on 20241203, the second half of the analysis is the last of Fassbinder's early works: Beware of a Holy Whore.

Unlike his previous small group productions, this film had the great Michael Ballhaus as the director of photography. What makes Fassbinder's film stand out today is, first of all, its continuous split shots, unlike his debut film, which is even colder than death.

Beware of a Holy Whore is more inclined to be put together with multiple characters, and the protagonist Eff himself has a view on the film industry.


The camera composition, with a choice of 1:1.33 close to the square TV composition, is conducive to the smooth transformation of the film's effects onto the TV.

We also see extremely gorgeous, baroque, Renaissance-style Italian scenes.


The structure is divided into:


1. The director is absent, and the cast and crew form a food chain with drinks.

2. The director arrives on the set to deal with financial issues, the lack of film, and the lack of commitment from the cast and crew.

3. The director and cast and crew manipulate each other's emotions.

4. Finally, the film begins shooting.


The story continues to progress with his usual portrait photography.

Gorgeous camera movements in the film.

An original camera setup that has since been widely referenced by contemporary artists.
